Who are you, and what is your role at HCA?
My name is Wouter Koldenhof, and I work as a Project Engineer at Holland Colours. In this role, I’m responsible for setting up and implementing technical investments within the company. This includes drafting investment proposals, managing budgets, and overseeing projects from the initial idea all the way to completion. These projects can involve machines, buildings, or the site infrastructure, mainly related to our Apeldoorn location. I ensure that everything runs smoothly and that we implement improvements that optimize our colleagues’ workflow. What do I enjoy most about my job? Every project has a start and finish I get to work on, and I get to use my creativity to truly improve things.
How did you join HCA, and how long have you been here?
I started as a summer worker in production. After being away for a short while, I returned when I saw a vacancy for a position in the technical department. I started there as a technician, became assistant head, and eventually grew into the role of Head of Technical Services. Over the years, I’ve developed into my current role as a Project Engineer. I’ve now been with Holland Colours for 29 years.
What’s something people don’t realize about your role?
Many people think my job is mainly about the execution of projects, but it involves the full process, from idea generation and preparation to delivery. It’s a very diverse role where you can really make a difference. Good communication is key. In order to implement and maintain changes, strong communication with colleagues is essential. My workdays look various, I usually start with meetings with the team leaders at operations, give tours, follow up on action items, have meetings with suppliers and external partners, and work on project proposals. It’s varied, fast-paced, and never boring.
What makes working at HCA so enjoyable for you?
The sense of togetherness. We really do things as a team. I truly appreciate the communication with colleagues, it’s fun and engaging. On top of that, I find the products we make interesting and fun. I get to work on all kinds of projects, from small adjustments to major renovations, each with its own challenges. That variety is what I really enjoy. One moment I’m setting up a new project, the next I’m handling legal aspects, changing packaging, adjusting workflows, and coordinating the communication around it.
A moment you felt really proud of yourself and the company?
There are several projects I’m proud of, especially when we’ve delivered something that truly helps our colleagues and moves the company forward. One standout example is the silicone dispensing installation. We designed and executed the entire project ourselves, in-house, together with the technical team.
What kind of project energizes you the most?
Honestly, any initiative where I can help the company move forward. I love thinking about improvement processes and actually putting them into practice. That combination of strategy and execution really gives me energy. One of my favorite projects was the Nefex line. It was a major renovation where everything came together: legal, procurement, sales, packaging, workflows, and communication. Meeting deadlines and requirements while managing all those elements made it both challenging and incredibly rewarding.
What would you say to new colleagues on their first day?
Holland Colours is a fantastic company with great people. There are plenty of opportunities to develop yourself, you get freedom, trust, and room to grow. Make sure to take advantage of those opportunities!
What’s the atmosphere like in your department?
Technically, I’m the only person in my department, but I collaborate closely with many colleagues. That teamwork, the friendly atmosphere, the humor. It all makes coming to work something I look forward to.
Which quote best fits you and your work, and why?
“Together we innovate.”
In my role, I’m constantly looking for better ways to do things. Together, we identify improvements and implement them to help our colleagues and the company progress. Every project is an opportunity to innovate and improve.
When have you really been able to make a difference?
When a project is successfully completed and colleagues notice that their work has become easier or more efficient, that’s when I know I’ve made a real impact. I’m driven by creating lasting improvements that help the company grow.
Your ultimate HCA tip for newcomers?
Get involved in activities, like we do the annual Drakenboot in Apeldoorn, but also other team outings. It's a fun way to get to know your colleagues outside of work. It really adds to your enjoyment of work.
